A local chiropractor claims scans with the Tytron C-3000 can diagnose brainstem pressure for patients with multiple sclerosis.
"They want to look outside the drug therapies to see if there's
anything else," explains chiropractor Dr. Michael Vactor of Vactor
Family Chiropractic.
With multiple sclerosis, the body attacks the coating of the nerves,
which causes them to short circuit. People can have numbness, weakness,
blindness, trouble walking or speaking, all depending on which part of
the brain or spinal cord is affected.
"MS can affect the brain stem, but when it affects the brainstem, what
it does is cause inflammation in the brainstem," Dr. Stuart Silverman,
a neurologist, said. "So we don't usually use the word, 'pressure.' We
use inflammation."
"And we can see by MRI scans whether there is inflammation in the
brainstem, and that's really the gold standard to know if there's
brainstem disease," he added.
People with MS should look carefully before they leap toward any supplement, therapy, or device.
"The concern always is that people be cautious about proceeding into
any treatment without knowing that it's the correct one for them," says
Susan Navish, executive director of the Multiple Sclerosis Service
Society. "We receive hundreds of phone calls, thousands of phone calls
a year asking all kinds of questions that first of all should always be
directed to their physicians."
There is currently no cure for MS.
Standard treatments are aimed at reducing the attacks on the nerves, and stiffness in the muscles.
